A place in the last 16 of the Senior Cup was at stake as Shirley took on unbeaten Division 3 side Great Barr. Shirley had a forced early change with Jarzinho Nelson's hamstring going, and he was replaced by Greg Bramwell on 5 minutes. Shortly after, Mike Mountford went round 3 defenders to finish superbly after 7 minutes. Mike didn't stop there either, when his free-kick 20 yards out found Scott Kite's head, who netted from 12 yards on 13 mins.
Scott Kite hadn't finished either when he met another cross at the far post to put Shirley 3-0 up after 16 mins. Shirley as predicted, sat back and combined with some decision found themselves conceeding twice prior to half time, and took a slender 3-2 lead into the 2nd half.
A 'reasoned' half time team talk seemed to do the trick, as Shirley pressed
from the kick off. Tom Lynch made way for Matt Shaw on 50 mins, which enabled
a change in formation, that had an immediate impact. Some good work down
the right, ended with Simon Jamieson finding the net on 52 mins. Just 5
minutes later, Martin Hand's was fouled in the area, enabling Mike Mountford
to bag his 2nd from the spot on 57 mins.
Great Barr rallied, but didn't trouble Shirley's goal throughout the 2nd half. Mike Mountford netted his hat-trick on 70 mins. Ben Ince's performance was rewarded on 73 mins, when he also found the net.
Simon Jamieson
made way for Nic Newell on 73 mins too. More pressure by Shirley saw Damien
Kirsch continue his goalscoring form on 81 mins, but Mike Mountford finished
the job with his fourth on 85 mins, and Shirley's 9th.
