The Senior Cup is Shirley Athletic's priority now, and, being the only realistic chance of silverware, you'd think everyone would be up for it! Sloppy passing and day-dreaming / ball watching by a few Shirley players, enabled Old Wulfs to look better than they actually were throughout the 1st half. Old Wulfs made and had the breaks early on, but never forced any action from keeper Darren Brown....but, how long could that last. Shirley created the odd moment of opportunity, but couldn't capitalise. Old Wulfs went ahead on 30 mins, when a great cross from the left was met at the back post, and duly despatched. Shirley began to take note, and started probing a little more. Simon Jamieson looked to have eluded the last man and finished calmly, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. Shirley did not have to wait to long though, as moments later Jamieson scored again, this time on the stroke of half time. Patch's half time team talk having to be altered!!
Shirley went
straight at Old Wulfs, with the Old Wulfs manager noting our key threat
being No.6, Scott Kite. Shirley started to play through the middle, with
the ball on the deck. They were rewarded when, the ball was played wide
to Martin Hands, who's cross was met by the head of Scott Kite in the Old
Wulf's 6 yard box. Scott Kite continued to cause problems, and this freed
up Ben Ince to start making things happen in midfield with Ryan Long. Simon
Jamieson battled and created a goalscoring opportunity, but was denied by
the Old Wulfs keeper, who couldn't hold on to the ball, and Scott Kite finished
off in the 83rd min. Matty Shaw made way for Liam Looney, and Simon Jamieson
made way for Jairzinho Nelson. Old Wulfs pushed up to try and get back into
the game, but a long clearance by Darren Brown, was superbly dummied by
the new Nelson, leaving Mike Mountford one-on-one with the advancing Old
Wulfs keeper....Mountford lobbed into the goal to make the game safe at
4-1 on 87 mins. Rob Reilly replaced Mountford. Shirley could have added
in the final stages, but it was Old Wulf that pulled one back. Final score
Old Wulfs 2 - 4 Shirley Athletic - Now for the Semi-Finals
